Event: 1773 The first
book by an African American is published (in England) when Phillis
Wheatley, then a slave, publishes "Poems on Various Subjects,
Religious and Moral."
Comment: Phyllis Wheatley writes about life as a slave and how her religous and moral self got her through and free. This impacted black families because in today's society, religion is greatly rooted into family. This has opened the door for blacks to start their own churches to fellowship and uplift eachother. Many different churches of many different demoniations are deeply rooted in the african-american community. Wheatley's writings also emphasized on morals which have gotten away from the younger generation of african americans.

Highland Garnett and Alexander

Comment: Henry H. Garnett and Alexander Crummell paved the way for African Americans to give themselves the courage to make their own way. For many years blacks were deprived of an education and these two men stepped up and founded their own school. This impacted the black community because now there are many black founded colleges educating and giving blacks mind-blowing opportunities. This has created an uplifting and united environment on these college campuses. Many almer maters give back to help the next group of college graduates.
